The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate: how it works

Information current as at 28 September 2026. Government programs change, so we confirm your eligibility and discount in your written quote.

The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program started on 1 July 2025. It gives households a discount on eligible home batteries. The government's stated aim is a discount of around 30% of the upfront cost.

How the discount is applied

The discount comes through small-scale technology certificates (STCs) under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. As your accredited installer, we apply it directly as an upfront discount on your quote. There's no separate application for you to lodge.

To be eligible, the battery must:

• be on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list
• be installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia accredited installer with battery endorsement
• be installed with a new or existing solar system
• be capable of joining a virtual power plant (VPP), if connected to the grid. You don't have to join one
• be between 5 and 100 kWh nominal capacity. Certificates apply to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity

Battery size matters

Since 1 May 2026, the full rate applies to the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, 60% of the rate to capacity between 14 and 28 kWh, and 15% between 28 and 50 kWh.

The rebate steps down on 1 January 2027

The number of certificates per kWh is set to fall from 6.8 (installations from May to December 2026) to 5.7 (installations from January to June 2027). It then keeps falling every six months until the program ends in 2030. The discount is set by your installation date, not your quote date.

The value of the discount also depends on the market price of certificates at the time, so we'll show the exact discount on your written quote.

Solar Victoria

Solar Victoria's battery loan has closed. A Solar Victoria solar panel (PV) rebate may still be available to eligible households installing solar. Income and other criteria apply, and the income limit changed on 1 July 2026, so check solar.vic.gov.au or ask us.

A word of caution: there's no such thing as a "free" battery. If someone cold-calls or knocks on your door with a free battery offer, be wary. Legitimate rebates are applied by an accredited installer as a discount on a written quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Usually, yes. It depends on your inverter, the age of your system and your switchboard. We'll check all three and recommend the best option. Sometimes that includes a new hybrid inverter or a switchboard upgrade, and if so it's included in one written quote.

What size battery do I need?

It depends on how much solar you export, when you use power and whether you want blackout backup. We size the battery from your actual usage. Because of how the rebate is tiered, bigger isn't always better value.

Is the federal battery rebate means-tested?

No. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount has no income test. Solar Victoria's solar panel rebate does have income and other eligibility criteria.

Do I have to join a virtual power plant (VPP)?

No. To be eligible for the federal discount, a grid-connected battery must be capable of joining a VPP, but joining is your choice.

Will a battery keep my power on in a blackout?

Only if it's installed and configured for backup, and not every system does this by default. We'll explain the options for your home and which circuits can be backed up.

How long does installation take, and what warranties do I get?

Most battery installations are completed in a day, depending on the system and any switchboard work. We'll confirm the timeframe in your quote. Batteries and inverters come with manufacturer product warranties, and Wireplex backs our installation with a lifetime workmanship warranty.
